One Timetable. One Truth.

Our latest Bus-News Magazine feature argues that the timetable is, in effect, a contract between authority, operator and passenger – and why that matters as franchising gathers pace.

Following The Quiet Force Behind Better Passenger Information in May, Elydium features again in Bus-News Magazine – this time in the Digital Solutions section of Issue 2 / 2026, under the title “One Timetable. One Truth.”

The timetable as a contract

The article starts from a simple observation: every part of a bus network depends on the timetable. An authority procuring services – through franchising, BSIP funding or any other contract – uses it to specify the frequencies and the places served. The operator needs it to schedule vehicles and crews. The passenger meets it as departure lists, journey-planning apps and screens at stops. Three parties reading the same document makes it, in effect, a contract between all three.

Harder to keep than it used to be

That shared understanding is getting rarer. Where a single supplier once provided the software for a whole network, today’s specialist systems are joined together by bespoke point-to-point interfaces, and the data streams between them drift apart. The article picks out three procurement assumptions that do not hold up:

  • that the data arriving in any system will be clean, accurate and trustworthy;
  • that “clean” means the same thing to every system;
  • that complying with a standard guarantees two systems will work together.

From chaos to control

It goes on to describe how our Timetable Management Platform restores a single source of truth through validation, version control and automated publishing – and why that matters most to authorities. Franchise contracts are enforced through service-level agreements and reporting, and if the parties cannot agree which version of the timetable was live on which date, holding an operator to account becomes guesswork rather than fact.

Its closing message is for anyone procuring bus services: alongside vehicles, depots, digital systems and branding, procure data integration too.
